Run the Race

When I was many years younger and several pounds lighter, I loved to play baseball. I played third base and would occasionally take the mound. I had a pitch they called “the blue flame.” I could never hit the long ball but I was a scrapper and chances were always good I’d make it to first base. Unfortunately, I never played on a team good enough (or lucky enough) to win the championship so I never got a trophy. It was the 1960’s and the only way to get a trophy back then was to, indeed, win the championship.

Then there’s basketball. I was never crazy about basketball. I couldn’t dripple without looking at the ball, occasionally my glasses would fly off thereby rendering me blind, and when someone threw me the ball, I would freeze in place. But my brother played basketball and one year I went out for the team. Well, I sat on the bench for the entire season BUT, miracle of all miracles, the team I played for won the championship and I still have that trophy sitting alone in its place on a shelf.

When we follow Jesus Christ in Baptism, we immediately join a team. We are full members and are entitled to all privileges and rights of that community of believers. What’s better is that our team has already won the championship. Our LORD and Savior has defeated the enemy, He has ascended to His rightful place of honor, and promises to take us all there to be with Him. Now, we have a choice, we can sit on the bench and receive the gift of salvation which is freely given or, we can get in the game. We can sweat, study, strain, and even bleed as we join with our brothers and sisters who daily pick up their crosses and follow Him.

Come on... if you’re not in the game, get off the bench and join us out on the field!

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us
